Travel Assessment
Report

After doing our initial assessment, we will calculate your current travel costs in terms of dollars spent, CO2 created, and other economic and environmental metrics.

Based on your preferences, available resources and geographic location, we will find the best routes (or trips) for replacement with active transit.

The report will include a prospectus: should you replace the suggested trips with cycling, walking or transit, you will save $X dollars, Y tons of C02, etc.

Baseline
EstabLished

We're certain that you are spending more than you need to on transportation. The cost of car use can be divided into two categories:

  1. overhead - car purchase, insurance, registration, maintenance, others

  2. cost-of-use - fuel, parking, tolls, maintenance

Maintenance shows up twice because cars need to be maintained even if parked, and maintained more if used. There's another category of costs absorbed by the tax payer, the atmosphere, the fish and the generations that follow us -we will show you what that looks like too.

We will create a realistic picture of your true car costs. If nothing else, you will be informed -information is power. By establishing a baseline of the true costs of car ownership, you will understand benefits of switching trips to active transport. In brief, the benefits look like this:

  • Money saved

  • Calories burned, muscles toned

  • CO2 NOT burned

  • Tire & break dust NOT fed to the fish

There's other subtler benefits, such as connecting with your community and discovering the natural world. Though powerful, they're not easy to write about -they must be experienced.

Maps to conquer the world

The hardest part of switching to active transport is dealing with the routing. Your daily routes by car are different from those on foot or bike. You'd think in 2024, it would be easy to get a good bike route on Google maps. Unfortunately, the world is not well-mapped for walkers and cyclists. Bike commuters know you can't trust the apps.

The more complexity in the routing request, the poorer it gets. In most US cities, even with decent public transit, it's difficult to navigate train and bus schedules. The Transit App does a good job if walking to the stop, but there is no good app connecting bikes with transit.

To help overcome these problems, we figure out the best routes for you and provide a map and timing to get started biking. By reducing ambiguity in getting around by bike, we hope to reduce the time-stress and fear of the unknown from this new modality.

Prospectus

You now have a baseline and all the resources you need to replace some number of car trips with bike trips or some other form.  This allows us to set goals and prognosticate the benefits of your transportation behavior changes. Your custom prospectus will show you how much you will save in terms of money by switching to active transport. We include the cost of bike upgrades, transit fare, and other expenses in our calculations.

You can expect to:

  • Save $5000 a year

  • Save at least 4000 pounds of CO2

  • Burn 200,000 calories, ~1.4M steps

  • Double the life-expectancy of your car

(These are averages based on the assumption that the typical Bay Arean will reduce their car usage by about 50%)

These are only the most tangible benefits that align with the most talk about American values. The prospectus will include other metrics that have a direct bearing on you, your neighbors, and your children (or the children of your loved ones).
